Towards robots for food forests – TecTalk

Join us at the TecTalk to explore the future of sustainable food systems! Discover how transitioning to regional, plant-based diets aligned with the EAT-Lancet guidelines can transform our food production.
Marius Monen will dive into the potential of biodiverse, regenerative methods like agroforestry and food forests, and how robotic technology can unlock the full potential of these systems. He’ll discuss the key challenges and reveal how new prototypes could pave the way for a resilient, tech-enabled, and sustainable food future.

Marius Monen graduated in business administration at Rijksuniversiteit Groningen and worked at Eindhoven University of Technology in different roles for more than 20 years. Currently, he has a position as program lead and senior researcher in the research program robotization for sustainable agriculture at Avans University of Applied Sciences.

He is particularly interested in the transition of the food system towards more plant based food in line with the EAT lancet planetary health diet. He is particularly interested in more resilient food systems that source their food more regionally and locally, produced in regenerative, biodiverse cultivation systems (like stripcropping, pixelcropping, agroforestry and food forests).

He focuses on how this transition can be facilitated by removing one of the barriers, the lack of appropriate technology for highly biodiverse cultivation systems (beyond stripcropping), while orchestrating the business ecosystem around the farmer in such a way that a viable transition path will open for broad adaption of highly diverse cultivation systems supported by robots.

During the TecTalk he will discuss the backgrounds of this transition, how technology can enable this, what the barriers are and how the development of prototypes of robots for highly diverse cultivation systems like food forest can accelerate that transition, ahead of the market.
